What is self-care? A beginner’s guide.

I realize that I talk so much about self-care, but I never really took into consideration that some people might across my site and not know what self-care is, much less how to practice it. It’s my goal to build my blog up as a safe space where self-love, self-care, body positivity and positive self-talk are encouraged.

So today, I want to start by talking about what self-care is. And before we get started, no- it’s not just all face masks and bubble baths.

At the most basic level, self-care means the ability to get yourself washed, dressed, fed, and function in the world. Everyone practices self-care and doesn’t even realize it. By making self-care a mindful practice, you can flourish instead of just functioning.

Sure, self-care can sometimes seem like it’s an Instagram buzzword, but self-care isn’t just for people with lots of money for expensive spa treatments or spare time. You don’t have to put off self-care until you’ve perfected your workout routine or bought the perfect moisturizer.

Self-care can be as simple as being fully present and engaged in your life. Ignoring your own needs leaves you feeling empty, but self-care will energize and recharge you. Self-care doesn’t mean overhauling your life. It meets you where you are. Think about the small steps you can take to make yourself better. For instance, I’ve started a 10 minute daily meditation and it’s already had a radical impact on my life. You might be surprised at how transformative just a few small changes can be.

More than anything, remember self-care isn’t selfish. It’s all about learning self-love, self-respect, self-compassion and seeing the impact that all of these have on your own wellbeing, and the wellbeing of those around you.
